| The 1971 basketball season opened for Maine West on November 24. The Warriors are three games into the season and hold a 2-1 won and lost record. The Warriors, guided by Coach Gaston Freeman, dropped their first game of the season to Forest View on November 24. The Warriors defense was fair enough to win, but their offense could manage only 48 points. Forest View won the game by a score of 65-48. The Warriors were up for their second game as they set out to avenge their loss to Forest View. On November 27 their victims were the Arlington Cardinals who eliminated the Warriors in the playoffs last year. The final score was Maine West 72-Arlington 68. The game was close all the way. The Warriors led at halftime by 4 points at 30-26. In the third quarter Arlington outscored the Warriors 27-16 and led at the end of the quarter by a score of 53-46. The Warriors were not to be denied, however, as they scored 26 points in the fourth quarter as compared to 15 points for Arlington. Maine West had their first win of the season to even their record at 1-1. |
The leading scorers in the game for the Warriors were Joe Thimm '73, 24 points; Rick Wolfgram '72, 18 points; Jeff Heist '72, 14 points; and Mark Tuttle '72, 13 points. The Warriors' next game was on December 3 against New Trier West. The Warriors won the game by 6 points at 70-64. The win wasn't an easy victory by any standard. The Warriors had to stage a second half rally to win the game as New Trier led at halftime by a score of 44-20. The Warriors put up a solid defense and kept the pressure on while scoring 41 points in the second half. The New Trier West team tried to cope with the strong pressure being put on by the Warriors but could only manage 20 points in the second half, as the final score was Maine West 70 and New Trier West 64. Scoring in the game for the Warriors were Fred Schmidt '72, 17 points; Rick Wolfgram '72, 15 points; Joe Thimm '73, 11 points; Mark Tuttle '72, 11 points; Jeff Heist '72, 6 points; Fred Compobasso '72 and Chris Bouchee '73, 4 points; and Chris Mielke '72, 2 points. The attendance at the games thus far has been good. The Warriors' next home game is on December 17 against Niles North at 6:45 p.m. |
