Maine West Students Debate; Jury Resolution Is Discussed

Well-versed, hard-working, and above average high school students are those involved in the Debate Team at Maine West. Many Saturday afternoons for these students are spent debating with other high schools.

The Maine West Debate Team, under the supervision of Mr. Robert Harris, is divided into three levels. Novice, the beginning level, assisted by Mr. Tom Weisgram, consists of mainly freshmen with some sophomores. Junior varsity, the intermediate level, is made up of sophomores and juniors. Varsity, the highest level, consists primarily of seniors and some juniors.

Each debate has two sides, affirmative and negative. The affirmative debaters feel there should be a change, whereas the negative feel that no change is needed. The novice and junior varsity are either negative or affirmative all year.

Varsity, on the other hand, is both affirmative and negative. During the first portion of the debate, varsity will be
affirmative; and for last half they will give negative views. Debates are approximately one hour long.

At the close of each debate, a judge selects the winning team. His decision is based on the presentation rather than his views on the subject.

The Debate Team has been under way since the beginning of November and will continue until the end of March. There are about 30 students now involved in the Debate Team. This year the jury system is being debated from all sides. For all debates each student prepares his own speech.

On the weekend of January 14, the varsity will hold a debate at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Scheduled for February, there will be a debate held at the University of Illinois. Later in the year, there will be a debate held at Eastern Illinois. On Saturday, January 29, more than 30 schools plan to debate at Maine West.
