Brotherhood Society:
What Is It All About?

Brotherhood Society is fulfilling its purpose at the present time. This purpose is to organize elections to honor certain students who have exemplified the principles of brotherhood at Maine. The basic reason used in voting is friendliness to fellow students. Someone who is a good friend will consequently be well-liked by many people and thus will probably be labeled with the word popular.

During the year the honorary society sponsors a coin drive for the March of Dimes. This project is usually very successful, but it is the only service that this club performs.

The spirit of brotherhood is a living thing, and the society that uses its name should also be alive. We're not advocating making it an open service club. We think that the honor of being elected by your class at large should remain. We do think that the elected members of the society should help to spread the spirit of brotherhood. THE BROTHERHOOD SOCIETY SHOULD TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER. Plans are now being discussed to make this idea a reality.
Brotherhood elections are coming up soon, and once again we must look to our classmates for nominees. If you're wondering what qualities to look for-think, of a true friend. This rare person was once described to us as "a person whom you can call at 3 a.m. to tell him that you cannot sleep." Carole King puts this same idea to music in "You've Got A Friend" from the best selling album, "Tapestry."

Several neighboring schools have disbanded Brotherhood Society altogether. We think that there is a place for this group at Maine West, if the members are selected truly on the pretext of brotherhood and if the society's aims are more clearly defined to include more service projects for the school and the community. These service projects not only help others, but they build the experience and character of the students involved.

So in the next few weeks, try to think of friends who deserve the honor of Brotherhood and who would help to make the group a functioning organization.
