Motion Pictures Make Progressive Comeback

By DONNA HOLST

Did you ever look in the movie section of a newspaper on a Friday night for a new movie? You will find many movies but a majority of them are reruns of older movies. I found that by looking in last week's paper, more than half of the surrounding area movie theatres are showing a movie already seen on their screen.

Movies like ''Butch Cassidy,'' "Bonnie and Clyde," "Mash," "Bullit," and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" are all being viewed for their second time around. "Funny Girl" and "Gone with the Wind" are around for their third comeback with large audiences still coming to view them. It made me really wonder why movies were being shown over and over again.
I talked to the managers of two movie theaters and found different reasons for these "flicks" to be shown repeatedly. In some cases, but not all, a movie will be shown again by request of the people. It may be shown also because the profit from the movie was so good, the theaters would like to see if they could receive as much the second time.

Another reason for movie reruns at the theaters is the high cost of new movies. Movies must go through the larger outlying area theaters before reaching the smaller suburban theaters, so reruns are set up until a new movie is bought. It is a complicated situation.

So if you go to the movie section of your paper this Friday night and see all older movies, think of the reasons behind this and enjoy yourself by going to a movie.
