Hopes for Conference Title Fade, As Bucketmen Drop Two Games

The basketball Warriors were busy over and around the Christmas holidays. The varsity played seven games overall, winning three and losing four. Their most recent game was against Wheeling on Saturday, January 8.

The Warriors were blown off the court losing 60-38. This is a 22 point margin. The Warriors played last night at Wheeling; and Wheeling's 6' 11" center, Roger Wood, and playing there were probably factors in the large margin of loss by Maine. Fortunately, this was a non-conference game.

Friday night at Niles West High School, the Warriors were embarrassed again. The score was 65-51. Niles West has yet to lose in conference play and may challenge Maine South for the Central Suburban League title. The bucketman are 1-2 in conference play.

The Warriors record in all games is five wins and five los-ses. They'll try to improve upon this record this weekend against Glenbrook North tonight and Maine South tomorrow night, January 15, there. At this point the basketball season will approximately reach its mid-point.

The varsity bucketman were in the Niles North Holiday Tournament and were fifth out of the eight teams involved. They lost the opener 73-69 to Niles North. Joe Thimm '73 got 21 points and Jeff Heist '72, 14. Thimm was named to the Niles North Holiday Tournament All Tourney Team.
Doug Meyers '74 saw his first action in that game since being moved up from the sophomores. He scored four points. The varsity beat Notre Dame 78-71 and Sullivan 83-71 for the consolation title.

In a non-conference game at home against Hersey on December 18, the varsity bounced back with a 69-65 victory. The Warriors started a half-court press at the outset of the third quarter. They scored three baskets within 47 seconds, and Hersey never led again.

They had been behind 34-28 at the half. Thimm had 23 points. Jeff Heist '72 had 16, and Rick Wolfgram '72 had 14.

The bucketmen lost their conference game here on December 17, against Niles North again, 66-63. Their chances appear slim of catching Maine South, the conference leader, which is undefeated. Thimm was in foul trouble throughout the game, and this may in part explain the loss.

Despite this, Thimm had 10 points. Heist finished with 9. Fred Campobasso '72 and Mark Tuttle '72 had eight apiece to round out the top scoring. The Warriors also out rebounded Niles North 34-29.

The junior varsity, sophomores, and freshmen A and B all won in their contests against Niles North. The freshmen were in the Hersey Invitational and lost in the first round against Mundelein, 72-65. The sophomores also laid it on Hersoy winning 44-27.
