Grapplers Lead conference, Defeat Deerfield, N. N., N. T. W. |

| Over Christmas vacation the Maine West varsity wrestling team began to show their strength against their conference by jumping into first place with a record of 3-0. The only loss was a non-conference one against Oak Park, 21-26. The Warriors first conference opponent was Deerfield. West won easily, 42-7; Ed Rappey '73 and Brad Vance '72 both won on pins. The next day they met up with Wheeling beating them by a score of 28-20. On December 18 the Warriors faced the Cowboys of New Trier West and beat them easily 33--17. Brad Vance, Craig Barringer '72, Leon Wilkens '72, and Scott Smith '73 all pinned their opponents to help in the winning cause. The next day they met Niles North and tore them apart, 41-11. Fred Gano '73, Barringer, Jeff Ligget '72, and Tom Willming '73 all pinned their opponents. |
Going into the Lake Park Tournament, looking strong, the Warriors came out on top. The teams which participated were Schaumburg 81, Glenbard East 54, Romeoville 52, Maine North 47, Lake Park 43, and Rolling Meadows 13. West scored a to-tal of 91 points to take first. The Warriors took three first place decisions out of 12 weight classes, three second places, and two third place decisions. Taking first place were Dave Gano '72, Carl Sjostrand '72, and Wilkens Second places were won by Gano. Liggett, and Willming. Third place finishes went to Ed Rappey '73 and Bill Tramel '73. Coach Richard Carlini commented that "The season isn't nearly over with yet, and we still have to face stronger opponents, although we are looking forward to a successful season." |
