Gymnasts Lose Close Ones As Lack of Depth Hurts |
||||||||||
| Tonight the Maine West gymnastic team will meet Lake Park at home at 7. They then travel to Prospect Saturday for a meet at 1:30 p.m. A victory is anticipated Friday. Last Saturday the Warriors lost a close meet to New Trier West with a point total of 99.86 to 93.56. Steve Holmbeck '72 scored high on the high bars and came out in the lead of the all-around individual total. He was backed by good scores from John Leer '72 on the trampoline, Bill Lumpp '73 on the side horse, and Steve Schwab '72 in floor exercise. Maine West was matched evenly during the meet; and Steve Schwab said "We lost because we were overconfident. I think we should have won." To date Maine West has a record of one win and five losses; their win was against Proviso West. On December 28, Maine West participated in the Thornridge Invitational. |
Twelve schools participated with West taking fifth and placing two ahead of Maine South. Four men from West competed in the meet. The sophomores have a one and one record, and the freshman team has a zero and two record. There are only 11 men on the varsity team to fill 24 spots. "The lack of depth has always been one of our major difficulties. I think it will be even more important next year because there are only three juniors on the team," says Steve Schwab. When asked about the poor turn out for gymnasts, Bill Lumpp said, "We still need more support, but another problem is in the gym class. They just goof around on the equipment and never really learn what it is all about or how to perform." On Saturday, January 22, the Japanese gymnastic team will compete against the United States national team at McGaw Hall at Northwestern University. Maine West will hold the Olympic. tryouts in June 22 and 23. This will be open to spectators interested in watching United States' top seven gymnasts be chosen to compete in Japan. Twelve individuals will try out. |
