Bucketmen Show Improvement, Rise in Conference Standings |
||||||||||
| In the past month the basketball Warriors have played five conference games, losing only one, to Maine South. The bucketmen have definitely improved over the season, and Doug Meyers '74 has been a great asset to the team. The Warriors, though, have hardly any chance of catching league leading Maine South. Maine defeated New Trier West last Saturday 70-55 for the second time this season, for another conference win. Their conference record is now 5-4. They'll have a chance to better that tonight against Deerfield and tomorrow against South. The Maine North Norsemen hosted the bucketmen January 28; even though they are in last place in CSL play, they gave the Warriors a good game. The score was 61-54. The turning point of the game was North's second quarter in which they scored only seven points. |
The Warriors had little trouble defeating the Glenbrook South Titans last January 21 at home. The final score was 66-56, and the bucketmen led throughout the game. They pulled away for good in the final quarter. The high scorer of the game was Rick Wolfgram, who had a game high total of 23 points. The bucketmen lost against archrival Maine South on January 15. The final score was 79-55. The Warriors stayed with the Hawks most of the first half, being down only 38-27 at the half. The varsity's problem was stopping South's 6'4" Jerry Jones who tallied 25. Last January 14 the Warriors were at home against Glenbrook North. They won 71-56, even though starting forward Joe Thimm was out because of illness. The bucketmen couldn't penetrate the Spartan zone defense in the second and third quarters. Rick Wolfgram '72 led West with 16. Joe Thimm '73 was next with 12, and Jeff Heist '72 had 10. On the other levels all teams beat the Norsemen in their contests. |
