Responsibility Involved With Voting Privilege

By KATHY HARTIGAN

Today's generation has great power - more than we realize. Why, just here in school the amount that we can control is clearly displayed.

We fought for the dress code to be changed; we got what we wanted. We fought for open campus; we're half way thereat least we can eat outside in nice weather, and we do have early dismissal.

Outside of school, it was the youth's widespread opposition to the Viet Nam War that has caused withdrawal to come about.

The ecology dilemma was not even recognized until the youth became tired of the mess caused by business and factories. Laws now have been passed to control the polluting.

We have caused all this change without the 18-year-old vote. If you are sick of the government, establishment, whatever, and the way it has been run, then you can change it!

We have fought for the 18-year-old vote, and we achieved our goal. Then why has only 20 per cent of the youth eligible to vote registered?
Tuesday, February 15, students were given the opportunity to register here at Maine West. Although many students did attend, the attendance could have been greater.

Congressman Abner J. Mikva visited Maine West on February 16. This man is greatly in favor of the outcome of the '72 elections in regard to the 18-year-old vote. He believes that dissatisfied young people now have their chance to change the nation, and he believes that any changes we would make would be wise ones. He stated that young people have always felt a sense of commitment toward their nation. Until recently, I agreed with him; but, now, I believe that we don't deserve the credit he gave to us.

How can you even consider yourself a concerned young adult (and I hope that you do) if you can't take the time to vote? It's your responsibility? But just don't vote, take some time to look into the lives and backgrounds of each candidate; then make your choice.

There is still time to register for the Tenth District elections. If you will be 18 before March 21, register at City Hall. It's your duty!
