Bucketmen Assured 7-7 Finish, End Season at Glenbrook N.

The basketball season is in its last stages, and it appears that West will finish somewhere in the middle of the pack in the Central Suburban League race. Their record now is 7-6, and all hopes are long gone for a repeat of a CSL title. Maine South is again conference champ.

The Warriors' final game of the season is this Friday night at Glenbrook North. If Maine wins, we'll have a respectful 8-6 season.

Last weekend the Warriors played two conference games and won both. The first victory was against Niles North away. The final score was 51-41, and surprisingly the Indians used the same starting five throughout the game although they produced only 41 points.

Rick Wolfgram '72 did his usual fine job scoring 15 points. Joe Thimm '73 was the only other Warrior to score in double figures with 10.

With these two conference wins the Warriors at least will play even ball this year. Their conference record is now 7-6. The sophomores also beat Niles, but the junior varsity lost.

The Warriors won the second of the weekend set against Niles North by a score of 46-44. The game was tight defensively. The West win was unexpected since at the time North had a 9-3 conference record to Maine's 6-6.
The Vikings also lost to the sophomores. The J.V. lost a heart breaker on a last second desperation 30-foot shot.

The Warrior season was in at least one respect a failure this year as Maine South defeated West for the second time this season. They lost before a capacity crowd at home last February 12, 71-61. The bucketmen held the Hawks at bay for the first half.

The Warriors stopped the Hawks' fast break and controlled the boards. West led at the end of the first quarter and at the half, 33-31. But in the third quarter South took command and the lead. They led 43-38 with 3:11 left in the third quarter, and West never challenged again.

Wolfgram led West with 18 points. Thimm was next with 12. Doug Myers '74 was rebound leader collecting eight. The day was a total loss as all other levels also lost to Maine South.

West lost last February 11 at home to Deerfield by a score of 70-59. Maine couldn't keep pace with a superior Deerfield team as they led midway in the first quarter, were down by only three at halftime, and again were behind by only four at the start of the fourth quarter.
