Three Grappler's Fall in Sectionals

The Maine West varsity wrestling team had three members of the squad compete in the sectionals which were held at West Leyden High School. Unfortunately all three lost in the first round. Fred Gano '73 was defeated by his opponent from DeKalb on a decision. Dave Gano '72 was defeated by his opponent from Palatine on a decision.

Leon Wilkens '72 lost to his opponent from Conant on a decision. This means that none of the wrestlers will compete in the state finals which will be held at Illinois State University. The wrestling team did manage to take second place in the conference losing only one meet to Glenbrook North which took first place.

Out of nine teams which competed in the District held at Maine South, the Warriors took third place as Hersey took first place. F. Gano had the only first place in his weight class for the Warriors. D. Gano and Wilkens both took second places which qualified all three for the sectional.
In the last meet of the season against Maine South the Warriors won easily 36-14. D. Gano and Dave LeFavour '73 both got pins for the Warriors.

The freshman wrestling team took a first place in the Niles North Invitational. Maine South came in second with Glenbrook North third. Brad Bonnivier '75, Tony Mietus '75, and Roger Herrera '75 all took first place in their weight class. As a team they finished in third place in the conference.

Congratulations to Coach Richard Carlini for doing such a good job with this year's wrestling team, also to Coach Ervin Geisler, sophomore wrestling coach, and Mr. Dave Pitzele, coach of the freshman wrestling team.
