Bucketmen End Season on Dismal Note: Fall to Maine East in Regional Play |
||||||||||
| The bucketmen's season is over and after about three and one-half months of play their record for the year, including tournament play, is 13-11. The big disappointment of this year was the Warrior's failure to win the regional crown. The Warrior season ended last Friday night before a capacity crowd at home. West lost for the second year in a row in its attempt to win a regional championship. The victors were Maine East by a score of 61-54. The game was a seesaw battle all the way until the Demons built up a three point lead with about five minutes remaining in the final quarter and held on to win. Keith Larson, an East sophomore who scored 19 points in the last half, and the Warriors' average shooting from the field iced the victory for East. Maine West begun their quest for the state basketball championship in Class AA, by beating Maine North 76-54 in the opening round of their regional tournament. Class AA is for schools of enrollment of 750 or more. The win on February 29 here was expected, since the Norsemen have only won one this year. |
The Warriors took the lead about midway in the second quarter and never lost it. West's full press and zone was effective. Joe Thimm '73 helped open the big lead and scored 13 points in the first half and 20 overall. Doug Myers '74 also had a good night hitting for 15. Rick Wolfgram '72 had 10. The Warriors closed their Central Suburban League season with a loss to Glenbrook North. The final score was 74-66 in overtime. The loss left Maine with a 7-7 conference record for the year and a fifth place finish in the nine team circuit. There were two factors in the defeat. In the third quarter West fell behind by 10 points. West came back in the fourth with 31 to send the game into overtime but again faded. The other reason was Mark Gorgal and Jim Reddington, the CSL top scorers. They combined for 47 points, and Gorgal won the scoring derby. The highlight of the game for West was Joe Thimm's 29 points. Thimm earned special mention in the All-CSL team. Mark Tuttle '72 was the only bucketman in double figures with 13. |
