Bierwirth finishes 6th, 10th,
Leads Tankmen to 18th Place

The state finals for swimming were held at New Trier East. Maine West placed eighteenth with a score of 12 points.

There were seven Warrior swimmers who were taken to the state finals. The Maine West tankmen who went were Steve Dueball '72, Dave Dettman '72, Larry Bierwirth '73, Tom Rasch '73, Rick Landuyt '73, Garyt Dahl '73, and Gregg Lambrechts '73.

Larry Bierwirth '73 did all the scoring for the Maine West swimmers because the judges only score the top 12 swimmers.

Larry is the only junior out of the top six swimmers in the 100-yard free style. He was in sixth place in the 100-yard free style and tenth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Although Dave Dettman '72 placed eighteenth in the 400-yard free style, he broke graduate Skip Parent's record with a time of 4:04.8. He finished twenty-first in the 200-yard freestyle.
Steve Dueball '72 swam into nineteenth place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The 400-yard free style relay team placed eighteenth. The team was comprised of Larry Bierwirth '73, Gregg Lambrechts '73, Rick Landuyt '73, and Dave Dettman '72.

Congratulations to the boys who qualified for state finals and also to the rest of the team who all did an outstanding job.

This season was one of the best that Maine West has ever had. The swimmers won 10 and lost only 4 swimming meets.

The team would also like to give thanks to Coach Kent Howenstine for the fantastic job he did in coaching them. The work was hard but he made the team into one of the strongest that Maine West has ever known.
