VOL. XIV, NO. 1
SEPTEMBER 22, 1972

LAST CHANCE, SENIORS!

Seniors who did not have graduation pictures taken over the summer and wish to do so can have them taken during the week of September 25‑29. For information see Mrs. Parker in the Deans' Office.

COLLEGE BOUND?

For all interested students, Maine East will sponsor a college night on Wednesday, September 27, 1972, at 7:30 p.m. Approximately 150 colleges from all over the United States, including junior colleges will be represented.

TRADITION HASN'T DIED‑YET

Seniors, disregard the rumor that the Class of '73 would not graduate in the traditional caps and gowns next June. The rental charge was not added to the book bill because it would cause the overall price to be too high. Seniors will be able to pay cap and gown rental in the spring before graduation.

KEEP IT CLEAN, KIDS!

You've probably heard a voice during your lunch period "reminding" you every two minutes that garbage belongs in garbage cans. If everyone does his share, which isn't very much trouble, we won't have to feel like kindergarten children who can't accept any responsibility, and we won't have to be interrupted during our 20‑minute "dining session." Why ruin the highlight of your day?

WESTERNER WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

The Westerner recently received the International First Place Award from the Quill and Scroll Society, making it a "newspaper of substantial achievements." The Westerner received 879 points ‑ only 21 short of the highest award rating.

"ACHIEVEMENT TEST

Wednesday, September 13, 1972, was the day scheduled for all seniors to take ITED tests or the "Iowa Tests of Educational Development." The tests were constructed to measure the academic improvement of a student over four years.

STUDENT POPULATION EXPLOSION

This year classes may seem overcrowded simply because they are. It isn't just a smaller number of teachers. The Freshman Class has an enrollment of 858 members; sophomores are 808 in number. There are 801 juniors and 747 seniors.

EIGHT NEW CHEERLEADERS

Out of approximately 47 candidates, eight new cheerleaders were chosen to represent the Freshman Class for the 1972‑73 season. The girls are Carol Kale, Sandy Schellenburger, Denise Madej, and Carol Jacobsen. Also included are Marcia Nelson, Jill Bober, Peggy Burchard, and Mary Fisher.
