Cheerleaders Return to School Rewarded

The Maine West sophomore and varsity Cheerleaders, during July 15‑18, attended "Camp All American," a cheerleading camp, in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.

Two hundred‑thirty girls, 40 schools being represented, participated in the competition each night after a day's work learning cheers, mounts, gymnastics, chants or sideline cheers, and pep rally psychology.

In the judging for the best squads at camp during a session, the Maine West varsity squad brought home a fifth place trophy for their ability as cheerleaders to learn, their spirit, their ability to coordinate cheers, and on how much they learned.

Also, they brought home two first place ribbons for cheers, and two talent ribbons, one for singing and one for their pom‑pon routine, the only one given.

Claire Robertson, senior varsity captain, won a fifth place individual trophy. Individual trophies were awarded to the five top girls who showed friendliness, leadership, and good form as a cheerleader, based on a vote by the camp's counselors.

Another senior varsity member, Debbie Brodd, won the trophy for the prettiest cheerleader at camp.

Because they received one of the top five trophies for their session at camp, the varsity squad traveled to the civic center in Lansing, Michigan, August 19 to compete for the National Grand Championship. Every top five squads, from all the summer sessions at camp were to compete in Lansing.

Maine West sponsored the varsity squad and Claire, who competed on the individual level for National Grand Champion while in Lansing.
