Who's Who at Maine?

Did You Know that seniors Jill Alke and Jane Eisfeldt won scholarships to art classes near the University of Illinois? The Women's Club of Maine West and art students raised the money to send the girls. Mr. George Blanas, Art Department chairman, chose the two students who would attend.

Jane attended the school during the week of July 16 through July 23. Jill attended the preceding week. The classes included 30 hours of art work consisting of three dimensional design, painting, and drawing. Jill won an award as most outstanding artist of the week. Jane won an honorable mention.

"Did You Know?" is a column dedicated to students or events that have accomplished something commendable and haven't received recognition for it. The idea is to make it a "Who's Who at Maine West" featuring all students whose accomplishments haven't yet been announced or that have been outstanding.

If you have any information or ideas for the column, please submit them to any Westerner staff member or to Mr. George Walker, sponsor, in R‑210.

Speaking of people with unrecognized potentials, do you know who this is?

He didn't say his first word until he was three. When he was seven, one teacher said, "Nothing good will ever become of him."

At the age of 16, he left his country to avoid the draft. He couldn't get a job at 19 because of his long hair and wrinkled clothes.

Before he was 30, he totally revolutionized man's understanding of nature.

Who was he? Albert Einstein, scientist and humanitarian.

Did You Know that sales for the yearbook, the Legend, will take place the weeks of October 24 through November 3? The price of the yearbook is $5. Students can pay for the Legend in full or pay $3 now and $2.50 at a later date.

Any student wishing to obtain a yearbook must purchase one at this time. A receipt will be given to each student purchasing a Legend, which must be kept as a proof of purchase.

Pictures left over from last year's Legend and any other pictures taken and not used are available to be purchased for fifty cents. If interested, see Mr. Walker, Legend sponsor, in R‑210.
