In the big Center Meet Saturday, September 16, Maine West finished an excellent second out of 23 competitors. The Harriers were 38 points behind Lyons, who finished the day with a score of 313.
Scoring for the Varsity A team were Chip Barbour '73, fifth place, and Greg Klebe '74, twenty‑first place. Pete Farmer '74 received a ninth place medal in the Varsity B race and Chuck LaSota '74 placed eleventh in the junior.
Freshmen Gregg Koeller and Howie Blietz were awarded fifth and seventeenth places, respectively, in their division.
This year the varsity will face a tough schedule. There isn't one dual meet on the schedule ‑ everything is either a triangular, a quad, or larger. Again this year every Saturday will have a meet. The conference will be expanded to 12 teams, and the addition of another Maine team will add more challenge.
The outlook for the varsity cross country season is good with seven lettermen returning. They are seniors Chip Barbour, Brad Frost, Curt Henrich, Mike Paul, Scott Sedlack, and Tony Winder.

The returning junior lettermen include: Joe Andrew, Marty Brenner, Lance Carlisle, Brian Dunnevant, Pete Farmer, Scott Fowler, Paul Frost, Greg Gyssler, Scott Johnson, Greg Klebe, Chuck LaSota, Doug Meyers, Glen Oland, Rich Pawelko, Rich Reynolds, Kevin Skahan, Rich Schmidt, and Bruce Wincletchter.
Sophomores John Bocshay, Jim Coburn, Norm Hillner, Jim Loris, Paul Mademann, Joe Paul, and Leon Williams are the returning numeral winners.
The new freshmen on the team are Howie Blietz, Dave Schmidt, Bob Pawelko, Dave Self, Tom McGuire, and Joe Burak. Greg Koeller, a freshman who placed high in tryouts, will probably be moved up to the sophomore squad.
Commenting on the team, Head Coach William Barringer said, "We have a lot of talented youngsters this year and would like to improve last year's record of 12 and 3. We probably will finish second, but it would be nice to make first."
