On Tuesday, September 19, the Maine West soccer team was victorious over the St. Ignatius Wolves by a score of 3‑0.
All of our goals were scored by senior Gary Helminski. This was the first victory for our Warriors this season. They were not so lucky, though, for the first two games of the season.
The Warriors lost to Oak Park, 4‑0, on Saturday, September 16.
Scott Richey '73 said that the reasons we lost were "the bad conditions of the field and the fullbacks' lack of experience." He also commented that "most of the goals were scored on breaks."
Stewart Seaholm '74 agreed with Richey on the bad condition of the field and added that "our team was exhausted from lack of substitutions."
Another junior, Robert Knowles, explained that "one of the goals was scored because our goalie slipped in the mud. Another one was scored when the sun got in the fullback's eye just as the wind carried the ball over his head. The other two were scored when Oak Park had two breaks and cashed‑in on them."
Whatever the reasons may be, the facts are that we lost.
Their luck was not any better one week earlier when they played Quigley South. The Warriors were defeated 2‑1.
Our only goal was made by Greg Mammoser '74. Mr. David Winter, varsity coach, said that "that game could have gone either way."
