The Maine West Warrior wrestlers have done exceedingly well this year.
At the Districts, held at Ridgewood, Maine West sent three wrestlers to the Sectionals. Ninety‑eight pound Bryon Real, the sophomore sensation, took fourth place losing to Maine North's Horowitz 5‑0.
Fred Gano '73 at 105 pounds opened with a good start, pinning Maine East's 105 pounder at 1:05. Gano then added another victory beating Maine South by a 4‑0 decision. Fred then went on to take a first and become district champion beating Notre Dame's Vito Vee 6‑0.
Gary Gunderson '73 started off with a 12‑2 victory beating Maine East's 138‑pounder decisively. Gunderson then went out and stuck Maine South's 138‑pound wrestler. In Gary's third bout, a championship match, he lost to Prospect's Randy Chaerwin.
At Evanston the following week, the Sectionals took place. West sent only one wrestler to the state competition.

Fred Gano, Maine West's district champ, opened with a 10‑0 victory over Lake Park's 105‑pounder. Fred then defeated Hersey's man 12‑1. He then went on to defeat Notre Dame's Vito Vee for the sectional championship and the right to advance to the State Tournament.
West's Gary Gunderson advancing from the Districts won his opening bout 7‑4 defeating Welter of Grayslake. Gary then went down to defeat losing 3‑0 against Wheeling's man.
Maine West's Tom Willming won his first match 3‑0 over Crystal Lake. Tom then beat Glenbrook North's 185‑pounder by the score of 13‑11. Willming then, by a pin loss, finished fourth.
Last weekend Fred Gano, 27‑1, went downstate for the annual State Tournament. Gano, making it through the first two rounds of competition, lost to Granite City's 105‑pounder. Gano took a very respectable sixth place in the Illinois State Tournament.
