Swim Team Sends Four Downstate

The Maine West swim team, which defeated Maine South in its last meet, officially ended its season last weekend on a good note. Swimming star Larry Bierwirth '73 along with Garyt Dahl '73, Tom Rasch '73, and Rick Landuyt '73 competed in the state finals.

Bierwirth placed sixth in that competition, pegged in the 200‑yard free style category with a time of 1:47.8. The other team members, Dahl, Rasch, and Landuyt, did not place. But their categories, plus the extra‑tough competition on the state level more than explained that fact.

Those four also competed in the 400‑yard free style relay. But again their efforts were all but fruitless. Maine West finished in twenty‑ninth place in the state finals with a total of nine points. Those nine points were compared to 215 of Hinsdale who captured first place in the tournament.

During the season the swim team turned in one of its finest performances. With rookie coach Mr. Skip Green at the helm, the swimmers posted an 8‑3 record. If this is evidence of the swim teams to come, it can be expected to be a "Maine West" sport.
