Pete Farmer To Lead '73‑74 Council

"Peter Farmer, president; and Lance Carlile vice‑president" ‑ those words were music to the ears of the winners of the 1973‑1974 Student Council officer elections. The announcement was made by Cheryl Kuecker '73, this year's vicepresident at the Election Jitney held on April 13 in the cafeteria.

"Give yourself a chance. Give Student Council a chance. Give Brock Akers a chance" and "Peter Farmer, Right Now" were familiar sights the week of April 9‑13, as posters for the presidential candidates appeared on every bulletin board in Maine West.

"Take a Stance with Lance" was frequently seen as Lance Carlile '74 competed with Lester Nelson '74 for the office of vice‑president. As Cindy Atkinson '74 ran unopposed, she was automatically awarded the office of secretary.

Homeroom assemblies to familiarize each class with the candidates were held Monday through Thursday. Each candidate was required to speak. Pete Farmer '74 emphasized the need for full homeroom representation, the elimination of Upper House, and the need to limit powers of the "elitist 16" or Executive Board.

Brock Akers '74 spoke of the individual wants and the individual needs of the students and ended his speech by stating that his only promise was to do the best job he could.

In his speech, Lance Carlile emphasized leadership qualities. Lester Nelson spoke of a need for better relations with the administration. Cindy Atkinson stated that she would try to do her job well and would be pleased to work with any of the candidates.

Pete Farmer, newly‑elected president, said, "I feel that I can provide the enthusiastic and, when necessary, demanding leadership that our Council and student body needs at this time.''
