Coach Ronald Brown, coming off a championship year as head coach of the indoor track team, has a very optimistic outlook for the fledgling 1973 outdoor track season which got under way recently.
The Viking Invitational was held on April 14 with 12 schools entering in the competition. The cindermen placed fifth out of the 12 schools for the day. The meet was a joyous occasion for junior Bill Klippert, who placed first in the high hurdle competition and second in the lows. Greg Klebe '74 finished second in the 880‑yard run while senior Bob Chapman captured third in the 100. In the long jump junior Mark Siska brought home a fourth place finish; and in the mile relay Bill Klippert, Greg Klebe, Kevin Skahan '74, and Scott Johnson '74 won second place.

The sophomores, who had a slightly better outing, ended the day in second place. In their loll‑yard dash Scott Unger '75 captured second place. The 880‑yard relay again saw Unger, who placed first along with Art Mraz '76, Bill Wademan '75 and Norb Plazjey '75 bringing home the second place finish. In the 880‑yard run Randy Van Vleck took home fourth place. The fleet‑footed sophomore also helped the team to take second place in the mile relay, with the assistance of Scott Unger, Bill Wademan, and Phil Logsdon '75.
Coach Brown's team seems quite confident of a first place finish in the tough Central Suburban League. As one squad member on the cindermen put it, "I think this year our team has exceptional depth in almost every event. Our sophomores and a few of the freshmen could make the big difference in the conference and district meets." If the above quote could become a reality, it could mean a second track first place finish for Coach Brown, and more importantly, some truth applied to those signs that say, "This is our year."
