Now that the end of the school year is approaching, various clubs are holding end of the year banquets and the departments at Maine West are recognizing students for their academic achievements and service. During May most of the departments hold award nights or teas to honor the students.
The Science Awards Night was held on Tuesday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. A certificate was awarded for outstanding achievement in the classes or for service to the department. The requirements for an award depended upon the standards set by each teacher.
Perhaps the most original awards were given out by the Art Department which held an awards night on Wednesday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Mr. Earl Meitzner of the Art Department designed the certificate and then a gold embossed seal was placed on it. The art awards are based on scholarship, service such as making sets, costumes, and posters for Maine West productions, creativity, and progressive growth throughout the year and are awarded by individual teachers.
The Music Awards Night will be held on Wednesday, May 23, in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Besides the presentation of awards, the new Tri‑M members will be initiated as well as the new Music Booster officers. A gold pin is awarded to the seniors who had been in orchestra, chorus, or band for four years.
The Kiwanis Club will help to sponsor the presentation of the Arion Awards given to the three top seniors in orchestra, chorus, and band respectively.

The Business Education Department will hold its awards night on Thursday, May 24, in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m. These awards are given to the students according to academic achievements in non‑skill areas, such as business math and according to speed and academic achievements in skill areas, such as typing.
The Speech and Drama Awards will be presented on Wednesday, May 30, in L‑101 at 6 p.m. After the awards, a banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn. Awards will be given for the best actor and actress and the Cameo Acting Awards and Production Awards will also be given. These awards are voted on by the Thespian members. The Speech and Drama Departmental Award will be announced as well as the Speech Activities Awards and Debate Awards. Everyone is invited to attend the presentation of the awards.
The Social Science Department will hold an awards tea on Thursday, May 31, after school. The Maine West U. S. History Scholar will be named, and the winners of the U. S. Constitution Test will receive their awards.
The Student Council Banquet will be held on Tuesday, May 22, at the Scanda House. Entertainment will be provided, and the winners of the Inner Council elections will be announced. Student Council members are invited to bring one friend.
GRA will hold its annual Sports Awards Dessert on Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. The theme of this year's dessert is "Storybook of Success." Outstanding girls in intramural and extramural programs will be awarded, and refreshments will be served.
