Two months ago Quad Council made a three part proposal concerning the cessation of final exams.
The first part of the proposal asks that teachers be given the choice of whether or not to give finals in individual classes, the argument being that in some classes it us unnecessary and impractical, as in art classes.
The second part proposes that teachers be able to decide in the cases of individual students whether or not to give a final. The Council asserts that if a student has a solid grade average a final is unnecessary. Also, one test should not have the power to destroy the work of an entire semester.
The third option offered by Quad Council is that teachers replace the final exam with a long term project due at the end of the semester. This alternative would relieve

the student of the pressure of the final exam period, and in addition, give each student an equal chance, unlike final examinations, where a student might underachieve because of illness or other complications.
This proposal was given to Dr. Short and the four Maine Township principals for consideration. Yet, according to Mr. Merlin Schultz, the director of pupil personnel, the proposal is number 60 on the business agenda of their meeting.
Quad Council's arguments are valid and reflect the feelings of the majority of students and many teachers. Recognizing the fact that some of the other 59 proposals now ranking ahead of number 60 merit serious consideration, shouldn't an issue as academically meaningful to the students as this command a more prime rank in the scale of importance?
