Demons Prove Baseball Worth As
They Beat MW in District

In the clutch Prospect struck out when it meant the most as pitcher Jeff Liggett '74 recorded his ninth K‑O boosting the Maine West Warriors into the semi‑finals of district baseball competition.

With the bases full and two out, Liggett powered three strikes past a Prospect Knight to end a 3‑2 showdown hampered by intermittent rain. The Warriors hung on for the victory after taking a 3‑1 lead into the seventh and final inning.

The Knights were just a base hit short of winning after two walks and an error threw chaos into an apparently secure Warrior win. The steady arm of Liggett plus the brilliant fielding of Jeff Schwarz '74 kept the Warriors on top and in the action to compete for the state crown.

Although played at Maine West, the Warriors were visitors. They jumped to an early 2‑0 lead when Schwarz doubled and scored on Chris Bouchee's two‑run homer. In the fifth with Dan Myska '74 on first with a free pass, Mark Eichhorn '73 laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Myska a base.

Schwarz, his second hit of the, a looper into the right field, drove in the run. Myska, with his speed, was aided by a Knight error and crossed the plate easily.

The Warriors racked up a mere four hits with five big errors. The other two hits for the Warriors were a center field single by John O'Connor '74 and a swinging bunt by Roger Blumer '73.

Chris Bouchee was showing his power last week, blasting three big home runs, one against Prospect and two against New Trier West. His power might be a deciding factor in the Warrior bid at the state title.

Coach Al Carstens' Warriors advanced to the second round of district competition last Tuesday against Maine East, and they lost by a score of 8-3.

In other Maine West baseball action, the Warriors downed the tough New Trier West ball club 5‑3. That contest recorded the two Bouchee home runs, one of which was a grand slam. The star of the game, Bouchee, drove in all five runs.

The next afternoon was not quite as fortunate as Paul Kosac '73 pitched a losing game against the Maine North Norsemen. The final score of 5‑3 showed a few weak spots in the well rounded Warrior team.
