Niles West is in for a 'battle as they take on the fighting Maine West Warriors in the Homecoming bout tonight under the lights. Both teams have shown well this past week.
The Warriors stunned the Maine South Hawks 46‑9 in South's Homecoming. That game was especially significant in that it was the first time that the varsity football Warriors defeated the Hawks. The old rivalry has now turned, with the Warriors on top. The Warriors are in first place in the South division of the Central Suburban League.
The week before, the Warriors were downed by New Trier West, 35‑0. New Trier owns first place in the North Division of the CSL. This game was especially significant because it saw the two division champs fighting it out. The match‑up between the pair could be the same in the championship playoff.
If so, the showing that the Warriors gave last week backs up the theory that the Warriors might bring home a crown, thus establishing the gridmen as a football powerhouse for the first time.
Under the helm of quarterback Bruce Terry '73, who was playing despite an injury that occurred in the New Trier game, the gridmen offense rolled for 40 big points. Scoring came easily early in the game, 12 points in the first quarter.

The first time the Warriors got the ball, halfback Dan Myska '74 ripped through the defense like it was paper and scored the opening touchdown in a 28‑yard run, just seconds after the opening kickoff. The Warriors found themselves in scoring position very quickly, recovering a fumble off of the kickoff from their first TD. Starting on the 27‑yard line, it didn't take long for Mike Werner '74 to fall over the goal line for another touchdown.
An unfortunate safety and a 51‑yard drive gave the Hawks their nine points in the first quarter. But that was the last time they posed a threat to the Warriors. It was clear sailing from there.
A drive that started out on their own 20‑yard line, set up Warrior Dan Myska's 40‑yard run for another TD. At the end of the first half, the score was 20‑9. But the Warriors weren't through. An interception by Cris Bouchee '73 set up one of two scores by Scott Smith '73, this one a 9‑yard run, the other a 1‑yard run. Another Warrior interception, this time by Myska, gave our gridmen another TD as Myska scampered 30 yards for the score, this third of the day. A 1‑yard run by Terry evened out for the final tally of 46 big points.
Tonight is a game that the Warriors will want to win very much ‑ Homecoming.
