West Soccer Team Victorious at South

On Saturday, October 7, the vastly improved Maine West soccer team was defeated by Highland Park with a score of 2‑0. Despite the loss, Mr. David Winter, head coach of the team, said that they are greatly improved over what they were last year. A look at the statistics will show this. Last year they had a rather dismal record of 3‑11. This year they are 5‑5.

The loss to Highland Park was forgotten when on October 10, they enjoyed a 2‑0 victory over Maine North. Scoring the goals were Gary Helminski '73 and Rudy Schroeder '73. Helminski leads the teams in scoring this year with nine tallies. In action against archrival Maine South on Saturday, October 14, the Warriors savored a shut‑out victory by a final score of 3‑0. Scoring for our side were Gary Helminski with one, and also with solo goals, Paul Kosac '73 and Cesare Bratta '73 and an assist by John Kois '73.

In freshman soccer, Highland Park defeated the Warriors in a closely fought battle by a score of 1‑0. The team quickly recovered from this squeaker, however, because on October 10 they scalped Maine North by a wide margin of 6‑1. Goals were registered by Buddy Dorsey with one, Kevin Miller with two, and getting the difficult hat trick was Maurice Hofmann. Maurice leads the team in scoring this year. Keeping goal for the team was Wayne Scott. On October 12 the freshmen easily defeated Niles North 4‑1. Maurice Hofmann tallied twice, and Kevin Miller and Steve Johnson registered solo goals. Against a tough Maine South team on October 15, the hard-fighting Warriors were beaten 2‑0.
