Two consecutive victories at the end of the season gave Maine West a final record of 5‑3, a vast improvement over last year's disappointing 1‑7 finish. After losing the Homecoming game to Niles West, 7‑0, the Warriors came back to beat Deerfield with a last‑minute touchdown, 19‑14, and then traveled to Niles North and won big, 36‑12.
In the Homecoming game of October 20, scoring was a rarity as the defensive units of both teams played quite well. The lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a 52‑yard run by Niles West halfback Tom Flood, and that proved to be all that was needed for an Indian victory.
On the following Friday night the Warriors played what was probably their most thrilling game of the season as they pulled out a last‑minute victory over Deerfield. Deerfield opened the scoring in the first quarter on a short run through the left side of the Warrior defense by Kurt Hezner, and tallied again in the second quarter, this time on an 88‑yard run by Hezner.

With the score then standing at 14‑0, the Warriors struck back late in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from Bruce Terry '73 to Chris Bouchee '73. The extra point attempt by John O'Connor '74 was successful, and the score at the half found Deerfield leading, 14‑7.
In the third quarter Scott Smith '73 drove seven yards for a touchdown to pull the Warriors within a point of Deerfield, 14‑13. The winning touchdown was scored in the final minute of the final quarter, as Scott Smith plunged through the Deerfield defense from a yard out to give the Warriors a victory.
Last Saturday at Niles North, Maine West opened the scoring in the first quarter and never trailed in the game thereafter.
Touchdowns for the Warriors were scored by Mike Werner '74 on a 4‑yard run, Chris Bouchee on a 31‑yard pass from Bruce Terry, and Scott Smith on a 19‑yard run.
John O'Connor scored twice, once on a 7‑yard run and again on an 8‑yard pass from Terry. O’Connor also kicked a 16‑yard field goal, his first and only one of the season.
