This year 85 Maine West High School seniors have been chosen as State Scholars by the Illinois State Scholarship Commission in the 1973‑74 competitive state scholarship program.
The road to becoming a State Scholar is not an easy one. State Scholars represent almost every high school in America and are chosen from 51,000 students who enter competition by taking an examination administered by the American College Testing Program. The academic record of the student is also useful in determining the merit of the student.
The rewards for being named State Scholar are many. All State Scholars receive a Certificate of Merit which identifies them as having high academic achievement in high school. Also, monetary awards of up to $1,200 for use in tuition in public or private colleges as well as schools of nursing are given to students who qualify for financial assistance.
