Maine West Girls Go to State Meet

On October 21, the Maine West girls' tennis team competed in the state meet held at Arlington Heights. Participating in the meet were Kathy Zyrkowski '73, first singles; and Kim Tuttle '74, second singles. In doubles were Monica Polacek '74 and Karen Neetz '74, first doubles; and Barb Schwarz '75 and Maureen Brock '75, second doubles team. Barb and Maureen advanced to the third round, only to be eliminated by Arlington Heights. All other teams were eliminated in the first round. The meet ended with Maine West tied for sixth place with Homewood‑Flossmoor.

The tennis conference playoffs were held at Maine West on October 27 and 28. The result of the playoffs left Maine West in seventh place (last). The tennis season ended with a record of one win and six losses.

Mrs. Terry Milam, the girls' swimming team coach, was not entirely displeased with the loss. Many of the girls lowered their best time, and six seconds were shaved off the 200‑yard free style relay. On Saturday, November 4, the Central Suburban League meet was held. Out of 11 schools that participated, Maine West placed fourth. The total number of points scored (by Maine West) was 158, with the top school (Maine South) scoring 209.

This quarter's team activities include volleyball, gymnastics, and fencing. This year will mark the first time that volleyball will be recognized as a league sport in the Central Suburban League. It will also be the first time gymnastics and fencing teams are allowed to compete against other schools in the state of Illinois.
