Seniors Gail Nygaard and Mark Eichhorn have been newly elected to receive DAR and SAR good citizen awards. The two were chosen on the basis of their dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
In late December the Senior Class nominated three girls and three boys whom they thought qualified for the award. The faculty was then left to cast the deciding votes for two (one girl and one boy) of the following senior candidates: Cynthia Figge, Lynn Heiden, Gail Nygaard, Mark Drysch, Mark Eichhorn, and Phillip Vacarello.
Gail will be honored with other district high school winners at a March luncheon. She will receive a certificate and an award. Gail is now eligible for further competition. Mark will receive a medal.
Established in 1890, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) are national organizations devoted to encouraging patriotism in the American way. Anyone interested in historic values is invited to join.

The organizations sponsor the annual competition nationwide. First, two students are chosen from each high school and honored. The boys are only eligible for this competition. But, for the girls, the DAR sponsors further competition.
A district competition is held. Next, state competition begins. For this competition each girl is interviewed and given a written examination. Winners are presented with either a bond or a scholarship. Finally, one national winner is chosen to receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The students are selected according to four major qualities determining a good citizen. They must be dependable, which includes being truthful, honest, and punctual. The students have to show service in the form of cooperation, helpfulness, and responsibility.
The students must exercise leadership by demonstrating personality, self‑control, and initiative. They also have to prove their patriotism by exercising loyalty to American ideals.
