Warrior Gymnasts Drop to Niles West

The Maine West gymnastics team has been plagued with bad luck throughout the season. Their loss last Saturday to Niles West was evidence of their misfortunes.

The final tally of 97.2 for Niles and 77.3 for the Warriors indicates the troubles that the gymnastic squad is having. The difficulties seem to lie in the fact that there are not enough experienced seniors to balance off the fine talent in the Central Suburban League.

The week before the Warriors dropped another one ‑ this time to Glenbrook North by a score of 96‑80. The 0‑9 record which the gymnasts possess hide the individual performances of many outstanding team members. Last Saturday the Warriors had many fine performances.

In the floor exercise the Warriors totaled 16.3 points with Marc Schludt '74 picking up 7 of those points. In side horse

competition Bill Lumpp '73 was a high scorer of the day – for the Warriors with a 7.4 tally. A total of 10.75 points for the gymnasts. The high bar gave the Warriors 12.55 points with Steve Taylor '74 collecting 5.3 of those points. In trampoline competition the Warriors totaled 11.6 points with Ken Heller '74 high scorer with 5.15 points.

Phil Deprato '73 was high scorer in two events, the parallel bars and the still rings, with tallies of 4.5 and 5.65 respectively. Total points for the Warriors in those two categories were 10.25 on the parallel bars and 12.1 on the rings.

Coach Sidney Drain, commenting on the season's outlook, said, "If we can put it all together, we can win two or three of the upcoming meets." We'll be looking for the gymnasts to get out of their slump and get into the win column.
