Cathy Aulert Becomes Homemaker
of Tomorrow

Cathy Aulert, a January graduate, is Maine West's 1973 winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award. Mrs. Lucille Stiles, chairman of the Home Economics Department, recently made the announcement.

Cathy was chosen from roughly 35 Maine West seniors on the basis of a written test score. She received a silver heart-shaped charm made by General Mills. Cathy will also be honored at a May luncheon for Home Economic awardees.

"Are you kidding!" were Cathy's first words upon learning she had won the award, especially since she was not enrolled in any home economics course. Cathy plans to major in elementary education at the Illinois State University, which she will attend this fall.

The annual competition was open to all seniors, both boys and girls. Being a home economics student was not a prerequisite.

Sponsored by General Mills, the 19‑year‑old competition was held nationwide on December 5 in all high schools. The competition consisted of a 55‑minute written test concerning a wide variety of questions on both the student's opinion toward and knowledge of nutrition, psychology, money management, and sewing techniques among others. The tests were graded and constructed by the Science Research Association.

Cathy is now eligible for further competition. In April two state winners chosen from the former test results will be selected. The state winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship, a 20‑volume reference annual for the school, and an expense paid tour of Washington, D.C. and Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, with a school adviser. The state runner‑up will receive a $500 scholarship.

The state winners will be interviewed at Williamsburg, where four national winners will be announced at a dinner. The four will be awarded $5,000, $4,000, $3,000, and $2,000 scholarships.
