The world of sports is growing for the girls in high school.
Fencing has become interscholastic for the first time this year, and this is the first year the fencers have competed for Maine West. The experienced fencers from Maine are Kathy Dueball '75, Debbie Maday '74, Karen Neetz '74, Pam Nehring '73, and Lynn Rosner '73.
This year's promising newcomers from the team are Cindy Bergstrom '76, Barb Breider '76, Gayle Brenscher '76, Kathy Pelinski '76, Sue Permoda '76, Mary Rossi '75, Cheryl Schlage '76, and Maine West's foreign exchange student, Betty Dolch.
The Central Suburban League has recognized a league champion in girls' volleyball for the first time this year. The girls' varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams traveled to Niles North to try to maintain their undefeated season record. The teams competed with the top four girls' volleyball teams in each of the two divisions.

Maine West junior varsity volleyball team are Karen Batey '75, Carol Gustafson '73, Tammy Hurst '76, Evelyn Johnson '76, Jane Krauser '76, Pam Linke '75, Liz Makuch '76, and Marcia Strykowski '74. The team s coached by Miss Connie Bauman.
The Maine West varsity team also was seated first in the tournament. The team faced Niles West, Glenbrook North, and Niles East and was successful in defeating all three teams.
The girls' varsity team is comprised of Denise Bell '73, Maureen Brock '75, Cindie Brodie '73, Monica Ploacek '74, Bonnie Serone '73, Kathy Shuttleworth '75, Kim Tuttle '74, and Kathy Zyrkowski '73. Miss Royleen Tipton is the varsity team's coach.
Another first for Maine West is the recognition the Central Suburban League has given for a league champion in girls' gymnastics.
The girls' gymnastic team defeated Niles North and Niles East but lost to Deerfield. Maine West came in second in a Maine Quad held a month ago. In the league playoff held at Maine North, West placed third in its division, and out of 12 teams captured sixth place.
