Gymnasts Break Records

Last Saturday afternoon's gymnastics meet with Maine South was a typical letdown for Maine West after scoring so high weeks before. Maine South topped West by 101 to 91.

Ken Heller '74 and Kevin Henderson. '74 both scored 5.0 in floor exercise. Bill Lump '73 scored 7.4 on the side horse. Steve Taylor '74 went over 5.0 on the high bar.

The trampoline was the best event of the afternoon with 18. Marc Schludt '74, unable to work floor ex because of an elbow injury, made 5.4, Henderson scored a 5.45 and Heller scored a 7.15.

Also Saturday afternoon Phil DaPrato '73 scored a 5.2 on still rings.

The reason for the let down was because the week before, February 2 and 3, against Maine North and Niles North, Maine West gymnasts broke some of their own records. They topped Maine North by breaking 100.

On February 3, Steve Nyberg '73 broke 5.0 for the first time this year and "That set the team off," commented Coach Sid Drain. "After that everyone seemed to follow suit."

Marc Schludt went over 7.0 on floor ex in both meets. Bill Lump scored 7.0 on both parallel bars and rings. Ken Heller went over 7.0 in the meet against Niles.

There are two meets left this year for the gymnasts. Tonight Maine West meets Maine East here at 4 p.m. instead of 7:30 because of the Hungarian and American International Dual Meet here at 7:30 in the spectator gym. Tomorrow afternoon Deerfield will be here at 1:30 p.m.

Three of the gymnasts gave an excellent performance at the all school pep assembly last Friday afternoon. Ken Heller, Marc Schludt, and Kevin Henderson showed basic routines of the trampoline.
