Traveling Musicians
Band Heads for Northwestern
The Maine Township West High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Paul Magnusson and Mr. Robert Kuite, has accepted an invitation from Northwestern University to appear at its Seventeenth High School Band Day on the Evanston Campus, Saturday, September 29. The MW band will be led by drum major Jack Shaefle '74.

In addition to the band, the MW Twirling Corps and Pom‑Pon Squad will also be actively involved in the Band Day.

The band will join over 5,000 teenage musicians who will travel from 56 different Illinois high schools to present a spectacular and colorful half‑time show at the N.U. vs. Pittsburgh University game in Dyche Stadium before an anticipated audience of about 40,000 people.

After two weeks of local preparation and rehearsal, the band will travel by bus on the morning of the game. Band members and their chaperones will be the guests of Northwestern University for the entire day. A morning session will be devoted to an intensive 21/2 hour massed band rehearsal of music and formations.
There also will be a special clinic for all participants, and a marching‑playing demonstration specially prepared for the high schoolers by the nationally famous 150 piece "Wildcat" Marching Band.

Mr. Magnusson commenting on Maine West's participation in the Band Day stated, "I think that it is a significant opportunity for our school members to take part in a musical undertaking of such magnitude. It might be interesting to note that the Maine West band is placed just south of the 50‑yard line in the center of the field."

Band Day was originated at Northwestern by Mr. John Paynter, Director of Bands. Mr. Paynter and Mr. James Sudduth, Assistant Director of Bands, will conduct the massed bands in "Right On March," "Ben," "Holly Holy," and the Northwestern University "Alma Mater." A special arrangement by Mr. Paynter of "Les Preludes" by Franz Liszt will conclude the program.
