No Butts About It:
Smoking Is a Drag
Students from approximately 100 Illinois high schools gathered at East Bay Camp, Lake Bloomington, on September 14 and 15 to participate in the second annual Governor's Youth Conference on Smoking and Disease.
The students met to exchange ideas about cigarette smoking and hopefully, according to Mr. Ben Kiningham, presiding chairman of the conference, to have their interest stimulated enough to initiate anti-smoking programs in their own schools. A similar conference, sponsored by the city of Chicago, will be held on Friday, October 12, in the Prudential Building. Any student may attend.
An evening of group discussions which covered such topics as the rights of the non‑smoker and student smoking lounges culminated in a presentation of skits and discussion summaries on Saturday morning.
The activities on Friday also included the presentation of smoking education programs by student non‑smoking groups and the demonstration of visual aids in smoking education. Participants were entertained by Jade, a Bloomington rock group.
Ms. Kathryn Mularkey, George Carlson '75, and Jane Dodds '74 represented Maine West at the meeting.
At Maine West the smoking education is covered extensively by health classes. For this reason next year the conference will be attended primarily by adult educators.
