New Cheerleaders
Freshman cheerleaders were picked on September 13, after three days of clinics. Those chosen were Linda Jacobson, Megan Peterson, Gayle Grzebieniak, Sue Shakespeare, Nancy Cacciatore, Jill Heiden, Dianne Buckles, and Diane Taylor. Sue was elected captain and Jill co‑captain by the cheerleaders themselves.
All Girls Welcome
GRA will hold its first playnite of the year, "Blast‑off with GRA," tonight from 7 until 9:30 p.m. in the cafeteria and gymnasium. The evening will include volleyball, scooter basketball, cageball, and basketball. The purpose of the playnite is to welcome the freshman girls, but all girls are welcome to attend.
Qualifying Students
This year's National Merit semifinalists were recently announced. They are seniors Bill Wyatt, Diane Prorak, Karl Wolf, Eric Swanson, and Richard Glitz. The students were chosen on the basis of their scores on the National Merit Qualifying Test (NMSQT).
Marine Band Hosted
Maine West will host "The President's Own" Marine Band on Sunday, October 14. There will be two performances, a matinee at 2 p.m. and an evening show at 8 p.m.
The prices are adult matinee $3.50, student matinee $2.25, and evening $5. Checks for the tickets should be made payable to: Maine Band Concert and sent to O'Hare International Bank (NA.), Marine Band Concert, P.O. Box 700, Park Ridge, Illinois, 50068.
Positions Announced
The 1973-74 Westerner staff are Jane Dodds '74, editor; Karen McGavin '74, page 1 editor; Patti Wagner '74, assistant; Pat Lauten '74, page 2 editor; Carolyn McGavin '75, assistant; Peggy Baer '74, page 3 editor; and Jane Tomek '74, assistant.
Others are Brock Akers '74 and Paul Lorenz '75, page 4 co‑editors; Chris Ladner '74, assistant; Jill Shakespeare '74, art editor; Jeff Bures '75, cartoonist; Debbie Hill '76, Yvonne Monreal '75, photographers; and Lorrie Swanson, exchange manager. Westerner Places in the annual Quill Scroll newspaper evaluation, the Westerner rated international first place award, representing a newspaper of substantial achievements. Several samples of the newspaper were sent in for evaluation. These were used as the basis for their rating.
