School Hosts 2 AFS Students:
Anthony Lloyd, Maria Piccolo
Maine West has the privilege of hosting two AFS (American Field Service) students this year. They are seniors Anthony Lloyd of South Africa and Maria Aparecida Piccolo of Brazil.
Anthony, known as Ant, comes from Kimberley - a town with a population of about 100,000. Ant came to Maine West from an all boy boarding school. He mentioned that there is quite a difference between his school and a co-educational school that has over 3,000 students. Ant is residing with the family of Betty Lou Evans, a junior.
Maria is staying with the Ronald Hawk family. She comes to us from San Jose, Brazil. Maria says that San Jose is smaller than Des Plaines; there are few trees; and it is hotter. Although Portugese is the native tongue of Brazil, she is having few problems with communication because she has studied written English for several years. Maria has become interested with youth groups over at St. Stephens through the Hawks' daughter, Diane, and she hopes to sing in a guitar mass soon.
Both students are in a strange country and facing many problems. Let's greet them and try to make them feel at home as much as possible. We can learn from them as much as they can learn from us.
