Two Maine West students participated in the University of Iowa's Environmental Study Program this summer. Amy Klages and Jean Packard went on a six‑week environmental project which was sponsored by the University's Secondary Science Training Program.

Jean traveled to the Yellowstone - Grand Teton area. There she began to observe plant and animal life. Animal behavior was her main field of study; but she also covered botany, zoology, stream ecology, conservation and techniques of water, and soil testing. She received a B for the course.

Amy visited the Colorado Rockies. Along with other high school students, she back‑packed and camped out in the mountains. She studied mountain vegetation and succession and the effect of human activities on the natural environment. Amy also received a B.

They were admitted to the university under special status after filling out an application and being accepted according to scholastic abilities and extracurricular activities. The girls received six semester hours credit each.

Brock Akers '74 and Steve Kisslinger '74, the ton varsity debate team at Maine West, attended the National High School Institute of Speech this summer at Northwestern University.

The intensive five week course in forensics draws top debaters from all over the country. Brock and Steve were selected to participate in the group of over 100 students from a field of more than 1200 applicants.
Brock and Steve will be applying what they learned at the institute to this year's debate topic: "Resolved: That the Federal government shall guarantee a minimum annual income for each family unit."

This summer seniors Dale Nichols and Eric Swanson went to the National Science Foundation Institute of Physics and Computers at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. There were 31 participants in the Institute in order to qualify, they had to have ranked in the 99th percentile nationwide on the P.S.A.T.

The boys rated in the outstanding category and were both ranked in the top five of the participants.

Elaine Caras '74 won the Miss Illinois Teenager Pageant and Vicki Richardson '74 was fourth runner‑up. They were judged according to personality, poise, and achievements. Elaine went on to national competition but did not place.

Senior Roy Chapman attended the national Champion Debate Institute at George Williams College in Downers Grove this summer for a two week course. Director of the institute was Mr. Robert Swanson, a former Maine East teacher who took Maine East to a state championship two years ago.

Members of the faculty were also busy this summer. Dr. Norman Ladd officially got his PhD, Mrs. Lucille Stiles visited the Orient, and Mrs. Marcia Born had a baby boy.
