Happy Hoofers
Studio Opens
Mirrors, yellow paints, and a hardwood floor have transformed C‑Oil into the girls' dance studio. With the addition of the dance studio, a specialized one semester dance‑gymnastics course has been added to the girls' physical education program.
Meeting eighth period first quarter, specialized dance is taught by Ms. Susan Gelz. During eighth period second quarter Ms. Judith Beck will teach advanced skills in gymnastics in the appropriately equipped gymnasium.
Approximately 70 girls are enrolled in the program, with roughly 35 in dance and 35 in gymnastics. The girls are able to take either one or both of the courses.
The program is geared to teach girls advanced skills in dance and gymnastics. The dance program includes fundamentals of ballet, modern dance, jazz, dance composition, and choreography. The gymnastics program will concentrate on individual advanced level skills.
Last winter all girls' physical education teachers surveyed sophomore, junior, and senior girls to find how many would be interested in the program. As many as possible of the 160 interested girls were scheduled for the course.
The regular dance‑gymnastics course is still included in the girls' physical education program.
