Warriors Use Kansas Tiebreaker
To Defeat Maine South, 21‑14
Turnovers killed the Warriors in their opener as they lost to Arlington's Cardinals, 13-6, while a new rule turned last year's tie into this year's victory as the varsity took their conference opener from Maine South, 21-14. Tomorrow afternoon's game is at Proviso East beginning at 2 p.m.
In the Arlington game of September 14, the sophomores opened with a shutout over the Cardinals, 14-0, but such was not the luck of the varsity team.
Arlington's offense that night was due mainly to the interceptions thrown by quarterback Terry Quinn '75, with an interception leading directly to the first touchdown and setting up another. Quinn led the team to their only touchdown in the second quarter, handing off to John O'Connor '74, who bulled his way over for the score.
Last Friday night was again a successful one for our sophomores, as they shut out the Hawks, 6-0. Maine South scored with 2:20 gone in the second quarter of the varsity game, adding the extra point to take a 7-0 lead.
The third quarter was a scoreless affair; but the Warriors finally got on the board in the fourth quarter, with O'Connor slipping through the grasps of the Hawk defenders for a 10-yard touchdown run, with the extra point tying the score at 7‑7.
Later in the quarter, the Warriors had a chance to take the lead; but a 21‑yard field goal attempt was missed; and the score remained a tie. Then, with time running out in the game, it was announced to the fans that a new rule this year prevents a game from ending in a tie.
The overtime began, with Maine West having first possession. Dan Myska '74 gave the Warriors the lead, tossing to a waiting receiver in the end zone on the halfback option play. Maine South then tied the score on a touchdown pass, and the game went into its second overtime.
O'Connor then plunged over on fourth and one to give the home team the lead once more, and the Maine West defense held the Hawks on the next series of downs for the 21-14 verdict.
