Speech Team Does Well in Competition
The Maine West Speech Team went to Pekin, Illinois, on March 8 and 9 to compete in the invitational tournament. The meet was sponsored by the Illinois Speech and Theater Association, and schools throughout the state competed. Of the seven Maine West students who competed, two won awards. Mary Jo Zalabak '76 won a first place trophy in special occasion speaking, which was the only trophy awarded in that category. Bob Limbrick '74 won an honorable mention for original comedy.
On March 2 some members of the team went to Maine East to compete in the districts. Maine West placed second of 13 schools.
The following were first place winners who went to sectionals at Glenbrook North on March 16: Mary Jo Zalabak '76 for special occasion speaking and humorous interpretation, Bob Limbrick '74 in original comedy and humorous duet acting, Betsy Forkins '76 in humorous duet acting, Roy Chapman '74 in radio speaking, David Franks '74 for dramatic interpretation, and the Readers Theater Production for "The World of Carl Sandburg."
In the sectionals at Glenbrook North on March 16, Maine West placed fourth. The Readers Theater Production won first place for "The World of Carl Sandburg," and David Franks '74 won third place in dramatic interpretation. The state tournament will take place on March 29 and 30 in Bloomington.
