Changes To Come In Girls' P.E.
Girls' P.E. has come a long way since it was first required in schools, as seen in the changes being made here at Maine West.
Some of the changes will be that sophomores will now be able to take part in the elective program. Another will be that there will be some requirements in this program.
In this program sophomores will be required to take three units of swimming, four units of individual‑dual, two units of a team sport, one unit of dance, and one unit of gymnastics. Next year, juniors will be required to take two units of swimming, one unit of a team sport, three units of individual-dual, and one unit of dance or gymnastics. Also, next year seniors will be required to take one unit of swimming and two units of individual‑dual.
Team sports include volleyball, basketball, speed-away, and football. Gymnastics will be tumbling and free exercise, trampoline, and regular gymnastics. Dance includes modern and jazz.
Three alternatives will be open for swimming: Red Cross Swimming I, skin and scuba diving, and Advanced Swimming 2. Sports included in individual-dual are badminton, tennis, fencing, conditioning and figure control, and archery. Others include golf, self-defense, bicycling, and the winter sports.
The new sports that will be added to the curriculum as the winter sports unit will include cross country skiing, snow camping, and ice skating. Conditioning and figure control will be for the girls who wish to work on their figures. Levels of skill will be worked upon in volleyball, badminton, and swimming. It will take about two years for the new program to get into full swing.
Three new special classes will be added. Right now there are two junior leader classes and one adapted class. These new classes will be aquatics, gymnastics, and dance.
