Traffic Laws Enforced In MW Parking Lot
Energy crisis or not, parking at Maine West has become such a problem that many people decide they can park just about anywhere. Add to this condition more students walking or riding their bikes in warmer weather, and you have all the ingredients for a nice accident.

Several weeks ago an announcement was made that the Des Plaines police had been authorized to issue tickets for parking and moving violations at Maine West. Some students view this decision as another way in which the administration is "out to get us." Others don't care one way or the other. Few know the reason for the decision.

The Maine West drive is a convenient short cut from Oakton to Howard as well as a great drag strip. A head-on meeting between these short cutters and drag racers could have disastrous and tragic results.
The decision to let police issue tickets is not directed against students (who should know the rules) but rather outsiders who are unfamiliar with parking rules and speed limits, but this decision should also apply to bike riders violating traffic laws as well as car drivers.

The first student to receive a ticket will probably scream that the decision is unfair and oppressive. If he feels that way, fine. I for one would rather see a few tickets issued that have my car damaged or my life endangered.

Must a tragedy occur before students, teachers, and anyone else using Maine West facilities realize that a ticket is a small price to pay for a damaged auto or a life.
