MW Speech Team Members
Compete in State Finals
Last Friday and Saturday, members of the Maine West Speech Team and some members of the Maine West Readers' Theatre went to University High School in Bloomington, Illinois, to compete in different categories for state titles. Eighteen representatives from schools in Illinois competed in each category. These students represented the top 18 schools in Illinois.
From Maine West David Franks '74 competed in Dramatic Interpretation with an excerpt from "Waiting for Godot." He was coached by Ms. Mariann Sullivan and Mr. Bruce Nelson of the English Department. Roy Chapman '74 competed in Radio Speaking. Roy has worked with WMTH during all his years here at West. Roy was coached by Mr. Darryl Schultz of the WMTH radio station.
From the Readers' Theatre, 10 students from Mr. Ron Mills' Drama II class competed. They were Debbie Harris '75, Kathy Stephansen '74, Kathy LaPointe '74, Jim Hajost '74, Valerie Gross '74, Steve Pelinski '77, Ellen Vana '75, Sherryl Scott '74, Nina Kleinhans '75, and Sandy Sadler '75.
The students participating in the competition were selected after winning in both district and sectional meets.
Preliminary rounds were held on Friday, March 29. David and Roy competed in the morning, while the Readers' Theatre competed in the evening. The final competition was held on Saturday, March 30. The winners of the finals are the top six competitors in speech in the state of Illinois. To win these finals is a high honor, but even going to state finals to begin with is an honor in itself. The winners' programs were video‑taped and sent to the news media to be aired later on TV.
Even though the representatives from Maine West did not bring home any trophies, everyone who participated in the competition was a winner. Being recognized as one of the top 18 schools in the state of Illinois in speech competition was a high honor for Maine West.
