A New Look
Traditionally, sports has always occupied an important spot in the high school curriculum. The sports page in a high school newspaper is often dull, a mere regurgitation of events already weeks old. Too much emphasis is given to the play itself and not enough to the players.

The Westerner would like to change its sports page to include sports of interest to all students such as hiking, golf, scuba diving, water skiing, and professional sports as well. We realize that this might offend many people who see this an attempt to demean high school sports. It isn't.

Instead of demeaning high school sports it is hoped that this new look will promote it by focusing equally on boy's and girl's athletics and attempting to get an interesting story away from the field of competition.
The recent notoriety of Bench Beat has shown that there can be room for stories other than play by play descriptions. This is not to say that these facts will be eliminated from the stories‑just reshuffled.

Currently, more and more high school newspapers are adopting this approach, and we hope that this change will turn the sports page from a dull report to an active and informative part of the paper.
