May Festival, Open House
To Feature Student Creations
By LORRIE SWANSON
Plans are being made for the eighth annual Spring Art Festival and Open House that will take place on Thursday, May 2. A show greatly anticipated and appreciated by Maine West's faculty and students, the Festival will exhibit the talents of
Maine West's young artists. It will be open for parents and students to visit during school hours and the evening.
Each year the Art Department, which consists of Mr. Eugene Patrizi, Mr. Mark Mattson, Mr. Earl Meitzner, and Ms. Ilene Vihon, choose the most outstanding and interesting work they feel their classes have created during the school year. Mr. George Blanas, Art Department chairman, feels that two new art teachers who are working on the Festival, Mr. Terry Bragiel and Mr. John Wood, are "doing an excellent job for their first year."
Mr. Blanas explained that each year he and his staff try to work out a new format of exhibiting the artwork. Each student is represented by a piece of his or her work. As many as 800 exhibits are shown in the Festival.
This year's art show offers everything from huge pencil murals, paintings, photography, and ceramics to hooked rugs and masks done by the Art IV students for an Orchesis presentation. The Industrial Education Department will also be exhibiting creations. Headed by Mr. Robert Cochrane, the department will show pieces from its woods, metals, electronics, and graphic communications classes.
"I feel we will have a very strong show," said Mr. Blanas. "It's been a good year. We have an excellent staff, and the students are very positive in their work." Obviously, the Festival is successful, since more than 4,000 people visit its yearly showing.
