Elections Over
Jeff Dennis To Become President Next Year
"Jeff Dennis '75 president and Georgiana Carlson '75 vice-president." Those words were music to the winners of the 1974-1975 Student Council officer elections. The announcement was made at 3:45 p.m., April 5, in the school cafeteria.
Signs like "Dennis in '75" were hung on almost every bulletin board at Maine West. Homeroom assemblies to familiarize each class with the candidates were held on Friday, Monday Tuesday, and Wednesday, before the election. Each candidate gave a speech on why he should be elected and what he could do to benefit students and the school.
The theme of Jeff's speech was "Progress for People." In his speech he emphasized that students should have the right to have a smoking lounge, that the voting day for the national elections should be a student holiday, that juniors and seniors should decide if they want to take Physical Education, and if they do not they should be able to replace it with another class.
He also said that when weather conditions are bad and there are dangers because of road conditions our school should be closed down and use the snow days that have been granted; but if the school does not use the snow days, they should be added on to the spring vacation. He also emphasized that final exams should be eliminated for students who have a 4.0 average.
Students used two voting machines to select the candidates of their choice. Other winners of the election were Sandy Sadler, as secretary. A treasurer has not yet been chosen, but will be announced today at the Student Council Banquet.
