Future Has Hope
If We Start Now
By JANET TEEVANS
Many people sit back and wonder how long it is going to take for this old world of ours to give up and withdraw from the universe forever.
Authorities on this matter believe our children may not live to see a beautiful clearing, buzzing with various forms of life; but instead there will be fiberglass and other man‑made materials. This future seems exciting with its incredible discoveries such as pills for meals and moving sidewalks. Also there may be by that time robots to furnish all of our needs, but is this going to be all of that great of a future for the next generation?
Without proper exercise our minds will begin to actually disintegrate. This may also lead to such things as not wanting to press a button to do the dishes or wishing to obtain some solid food instead of pills.
Life may also find it necessary to seek shelter below ground level, if a nuclear war arises, that is if anyone survives to start a brand new civilization with no exposure to the outside contaminated air. There seems to be no real worry of any such disaster taking place, but with our ever‑changing society our outlook is dismal.
The future can be a bright dream, but man must make it that way for he shapes and changes his own future. He may not make any brilliant discoveries, and someone similar to me may be writing this same article only a few years from now.
Another problem which the planet earth has acquired is overpopulation. We are starting to look like canned sardines inching our way around, especially in crowded cities. It is a relief to know that scientists will most likely have already found a way to transport people to many other planets, without using too much of our precious resource, gasoline. Many people oppose the space program because they have to spend so much for those men to go up in space, while their are people starving in deprived rural areas. The only thing that bugs the people in our neighborhood is why those guys bring back only a bunch of rocks when they have to pay so much for them to go up in there in the first place.
Extinction of animals is also now becoming a very serious problem, not because our food supply will be cut down considerably but because there will be an upset in the balance of nature. The animals which produce the food must have food themselves. Therefore, if their food supply diminishes, they die and thus kill off the food supply of other animals.
These crises are serious but not if they are observed soon enough. If people will work together to preserve our only world, our future may turn out to be nice instead of a fabricated future with gluttons sitting around doing nothing beneficial for themselves or others.
